Janaki Ammal - a brief overview :


Janaki Ammal - Botanist

✒️India's finest botanist and geneticist, Edavaleth Kakkat Janaki Ammal was born on 4th November 1897 as the tenth in a family consisting of 19 brothers and sisters in Tellicherry (Thalassery) in the Indian state of Kerala.
  • In 1945 she co-authored a collection of maps of the plant chromosome atlas with world-renowned botanist Cyril Darlington. She worked as an associate geneticist at the John Innes Horticultural Institute in London.
  • She was return in the year 1951 on the invitation of Jawaharlal Nehru to reorganize and consolidate the Botanical Survey of India. She also became the Director General of the Indian Botanical Society.
  • Developed many mixed genetic variants. Her biochemical research on sugarcane has led to the development of many special hybrid and genetically modified canes.
  • She was awarded an LLD degree by the University of Michigan in 1956. Received the Padma Shri award in 1977. The National Award for Classification was established in her name in 2000. 
  • Janaki Ammal, who spent her life collecting knowledge on Indian traditional botany was passed away on 7th February 1984.
