August 3 Today in History: Maithili Sharan Gupt Birth, Niger Independence & Friendship Day

Dear Readers, on August 3 we remember several important events that shaped history. Today marks the birth anniversary of Maithili Sharan Gupt, the famous Indian freedom fighter and poet who was honored as 'Rashtrakavi' by Mahatma Gandhi. 

On this day in 1976, Gandhigram Rural Institute was established in Tamil Nadu, becoming a major center for rural education. 

August 3, 1960 is also significant as Niger gained independence from France. 

In India and many other countries, the first Sunday of August is celebrated as Friendship Day. This year it was observed on August 2, 2026. 

We also celebrate the birthday of Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri, born on August 3, 1984.

மைதிலி சரண் குப்த் - Maithili Sharan Gupt - Freedom Fighter & Poet :

✒️ Indian freedom fighter and poet Maithili Sharan Gupt was born on 3rd August 1886 in Shirgaon near Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. His first major work was 'Rang mein Bhang. After that he has written many books like Saket, Bharat Bharati, Jayadrath Vadh, Kisan, Vikat Bhat. Inspired by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, he participated in many freedom struggles. Mahatma Gandhi hailed him as the 'National Poet' and he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1954. He was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha for a few years. He continued to write till the end of his life and died at the age of 78 (1964).

• விடுதலைப் போராட்ட வீரரும், இந்திய கவிஞருமான மைதிலி சரண் குப்த் 1886ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் 3ஆம் தேதி உத்தரப்பிரதேச மாநிலம் ஜான்சி அருகே சிர்கான் என்ற ஊரில் பிறந்தார்.

• இவரது முதல் முக்கிய படைப்பு 'ரங் மைன் பாங்"ஆகும். அதை தொடர்ந்து சாகேத், பாரத் பாரதி, ஜெயத்ரத்வத், கிஸான், விகட் பட் போன்ற பல நூல்களை படைத்துள்ளார்.

• மகாத்மா காந்தி, வினோபா பாவே போன்ற தலைவர்களால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டு இவர் பல விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்திலும் பங்கேற்றுள்ளார். 

• மகாத்மா காந்தி இவரை 'ராஷ்டிர கவி" என்று புகழாரம் சூட்டினார். மேலும், இவருக்கு 1954ஆம் ஆண்டில் இந்திய அரசின் பத்ம பூஷண் விருது அளிக்கப்பட்டது.

• இவர் சில ஆண்டுகள் மாநிலங்களவை உறுப்பினராக நியமனம் செய்யப்பட்டார். தன் வாழ்நாள் கடைசி வரை எழுதிக்கொண்டே இருந்த இவர் 1964ஆம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 12ந் தேதி தனது 78வது வயதில் மறைந்தார்.
