Dear readers, today we would like to remind you once again of some of the things that happened today.

In that line today we are going to know about "World Polio Day - United Nations Day - World Development Information Day - Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman, Cartoonist - Marudhu Pandya brothers - Sheffield United, Football Club."

உலக போலியோ தினம் - World Polio Day :

✒️World Polio Day is observed on October 24 every year. Dr. Jonas Salk was the first to discover a vaccine for childhood polio.

• It is observed to create awareness about the disease and to make a global effort to eradicate it and also honours the contributions of those on the frontlines in the fight to eradicate the polio virus from every corner of the globe.

• Polio is a highly contagious viral infectious disease which can lead to paralysis, breathing problem or even death. In medical terms, it is known as poliomyelitis. It can occur with or without symptoms.

• Poliomyelitis that mostly affects children under the age of five. It is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the faecal-oral route. It can also be transmitted less frequently by a common source like contaminated water or food. The virus then multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis.

• The poliovirus has three strains (type 1, type 2 and type 3), wild poliovirus type 2 was eradicated in 1999 and no further case of wild poliovirus type 3 has been found since it was last reported in Nigeria in November 2012. Both type 2 and type 3 strains have officially been declared as globally eradicated.

• According to the World Health Organisation, polio cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350,000 cases to 22 reported cases in 2017. This drastic reduction is the result of the global effort to eradicate the disease. In 2020, only three countries in the world have reported the transmission of polio, which are Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

• A resolution was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 1988 for the worldwide eradication of polio under which the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched. Spearheaded by national governments, the WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, and even the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance became an essential part of it in later years.

• உலக போலியோ (இளம்பிள்ளை வாதம்) தினம், ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் அக்டோபர் 24ஆம் தேதி கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகிறது. இளம்பிள்ளை வாத நோய்க்கு முதன்முறையாக தடுப்பு மருந்தை கண்டுபிடித்தவர் டாக்டர் ஜோனஸ் சால்க் ஆவார். இத்தினத்தின் முக்கிய நோக்கம், போலியோவை பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வை மக்களிடையே ஏற்படுத்தவும், இதை ஒழிக்க உலகளவில் முயற்சி எடுக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதாகும்.

ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் தினம் - United Nations Day :

✒️The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945. Since then this day observed every year on 24th October. It's main purpose is to communicate the goals and achievements of the UN to the world. Also, the United Nations is a unique organization of independent nations united voluntarily for world peace and social progress.

• ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் அமைப்பு, 1945ஆம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 24ஆம் தேதி தோற்றுவிக்கப்பட்டது. அன்று முதல் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் அக்டோபர் 24ஆம் தேதியன்று இத்தினம் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகிறது. இத்தினத்தின் முக்கிய நோக்கம் ஐ.நா.வின் நோக்கங்களையும், சாதனைகளையும் உலகெங்கும் எடுத்துக் கூறுவதாகும். மேலும், ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை என்பது உலக சமாதானம், சமூக முன்னேற்றம் ஆகியவற்றிற்காக சுயவிருப்பத்தின் அடிப்படையில் ஒன்று சேர்ந்த சுதந்திர நாடுகளின் ஒரு தனித்துவமான அமைப்பாகும்.

உலக வளர்ச்சி தகவல் தினம் - World Development Information Day:

✒️In 1972, the United Nations declared 24th October as the World development information day. This day is observed every year on 24th October to draw the world's attention to the problems of development and promote international cooperation to address them.

• 1972 ஆம் ஆண்டில், ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை அக்டோபர் 24 ஆம் தேதியை உலக தகவல் வளர்ச்சி தினமாக அறிவித்தது. ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் அக்டோபர் 24 ஆம் தேதி, வளர்ச்சியின் பிரச்சினைகள் குறித்து உலகின் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கவும், அவற்றை சரி செய்வதற்கு சர்வதேச ஒத்துழைப்பை மேம்படுத்தவும் அதன் அவசியத்தை உலகில் பரப்பவும் இந்நாள் அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது.

R.K.Laxman - Renowned Cartoonist

இராசிபுரம் கிருஷ்ணசுவாமி ஐயர் லக்ஷ்மணன் - Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman, Cartoonist & Illustrator :

✒️Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman was born on 24th October 1921 in Mysore. He drew caricatures for the Kannada comedy magazine, Koravanji. Later, he portrayed the character of 'Thiruvaalar Podhujanam' (Common Man) in Times of India titled 'You Said it' for sixty years from 1951. He has received many awards like Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He passed away at the age of 93 (26.1.2015).

• நகைச்சுவை சித்திரம் வரைபவரான இராசிபுரம் கிருஷ்ணசுவாமி ஐயர் லக்ஷ்மணன் 1921ஆம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 24ஆம் தேதி மைசூரில் பிறந்தார். கன்னட நகைச்சுவை இதழான, கோரவஞ்சிக்காக கேலிச்சித்திரங்கள் வரைந்தார். பின்னர் டைம்ஸ் ஆப் இந்தியாவில் 'யூ செட் இட்' (You Said it) என்கிற தலைப்பில் 'திருவாளர் பொதுஜனம்' (Common Man) என்கிற கதாபாத்திரத்தை 1951 முதல் அறுபதாண்டு காலமாக வரைந்து வந்தார். இவர் பத்மபூஷண் மற்றும் பத்மவிபூஷண் போன்ற பல விருதுகளை பெற்றுள்ளார். இவர் தன்னுடைய 93வது வயதில் (26.1.2015) மறைந்தார்.
